ChatGPT on the web adds a custom MCP server as a plugin over SSE or streaming HTTP.

What the docs say

ChatGPT connects a custom MCP server as a plugin. Supported protocols on the custom MCP page are SSE and streaming HTTP. The server is a URL or a Secure MCP Tunnel. Local stdio is not a documented connection on that page.

Auth. Authentication options are OAuth, no authentication, and mixed. Static OAuth credentials are used when provided. Otherwise ChatGPT can use Client ID Metadata Documents or dynamic client registration when the server supports them.

Limits from the docs

Use ChatGPT on the web. Workspace permissions and Lockdown apply.
Write tools require confirmation unless you remember a choice for that conversation. Tools without readOnlyHint are treated as writes.
Custom MCP servers do not require search or fetch tools.
The plugins page says ChatGPT and Codex share one public plugin catalog. It does not print every catalog name.

Setup

Open ChatGPT Plugins, choose the plus button, then Add custom MCP server.
Enter a name, the server URL or a Secure MCP Tunnel, and the authentication mode.
Confirm the risk warning, create the plugin, and install it before using it. Type @ in the prompt to select it.

Compatibility rule

A listing is included when its directory transport token is one this platform's docs describe.
